Areas of Specialism: Jewellery

Kate Jolley (MSc, GG, BFA) is the Associate Specialist for Jewellery and is based in our Edinburgh branch. While her main interest is in expanding her knowledge of jewellery history her expertise is in gemstone identification.

After arriving to the UK to further her studies with GIA (Gemological Institute of America), Kate achieved the level of Graduate Gemologist which endowed her with the skill set to identify gemstones and scrutinise diamonds. She moved up to Edinburgh in 2022 to pursue a degree with the University of Edinburgh and has just graduated with a focus in Art History: Research, Theory and Display.

Lyon & Turnbull has been a source of continuous support and education while she completed her studies, and she looks forward to her future with the jewellery department and the rest of the amazing team here at Lyon & Turnbull.

A St. George and the Dragon Pendant

This former lot, found in a jewellery box, is a remarkable piece. St George and the Dragon designs like this are not commonly worn anymore, but this piece stands out. The locket's lens, made of rock crystal quartz, is exceptionally clear, indicating the jeweller's expertise in selecting high-quality materials.

While rock crystal quartz is typically used for smaller lens pieces, this piece uses it as a window into a small sculptural form, making it unique. The craftsmanship is evident in the enamel work and functioning hinging mechanism, reflecting the care put into creating this piece. It serves as a reminder that craftsmanship is a source of pride and can be appreciated for centuries to come.
