Celebrating Design
The Great Exhibition in London in 1851 was a trigger for change in the field of art and design. Our Design Since 1860 sale celebrates the work of artists and designers from all the major modern design movements of the period, from the Aesthetic and Arts & Crafts movements of the second half of the 19th century through the Art Nouveau movement at the turn of the 20th century, Art Deco and early Modernist movements.
Recent auction highlights have included a cabinet by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for 778 Derngate, Northampton which realised £250,000; An embellished jade bowl by William Burges which made £40,200, a Liberty & Co. clock designed by Archibald Knox which reached £32,700, and a pair of boxes designed by Josef Hoffman which sold for £32,500.
