Note:
William Burn-Murdoch was a Scottish artist and polar explorer perhaps best remembered for his involvement in the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition of 1902-4. He created these designs for a decorative frieze which his close friend Patrick Geddes proposed for the exterior of the Castlehill Water Reservoir. The scheme was never realised but an edition of lithographs was produced from Burn-Murdoch's designs as a teaching aid, or for interior decoration. Examples are now rare; a set is to be found at the Geddes Study Centre, University of Edinburgh.
