Note: This cast is taken from the sketch model for Hamo Thornycroft's life-size figure of The Mower exhibited in plaster at the Royal Academy in 1884, and in bronze at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1888 and the Royal Academy in 1894.
'This noble, simple and truthful work' (The Sculptor, 1898) was inspired by a stanza from Matthew Arnold's poem 'A Mower' - "A Mower, who, as the tiny swell of our boat passing heaved the river grass, stood with suspended scythe to see us pass."
