Biography: Leon Morrocco was born in Edinburgh in 1942 and is the son of the Scottish-Italian artist Alberto Morrocco. He studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, The Slade, and Edinburgh College of Art and, in 1968, was awarded a scholarship to study at the Accademia di Brera in Milan. Best known for his bold and vibrantly coloured landscapes and still lifes, Morrocco’s travels throughout Italy, Spain, Malta and South America have greatly influenced his paintings in both style and subject matter.
Morrocco became a lecturer in drawing and painting at Edinburgh College of Art from 1965-1968, before starting a similar position at Glasgow School of Art from 1969-1979. In 1979, he moved to Australia to become the Head of the Department of Fine Art at the Chisholm Institute in Melbourne but resigned 5 years later to devote all of his time to painting, and eventually moved to London in 1992.
Morrocco was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1971 and has had highly successful solo exhibitions across the UK and Australia. His work is held in many notable public and private collections, including The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, H.R.H Princess Margaret, The Scottish Arts Council, Leeds Art Gallery, The Nuffield Foundation, and Queensland Art Gallery.
