Provenance: On Instructions of Caroline, Countess of Lonsdale, Lowther Castle.
Note: Samuel Dixon became famous for his sets of embossed bird and flower pictures, issued between 1748 and 1755, incorporating a technique which he called basso relievo, in which parts of the picture were raised and coloured in gouache or watercolour. These designs were taken directly from the first four volumes of George Edward's 'Natural History of Uncommon Birds', 1743-1751, as were the descriptive printed labels used on the reverse which included dedications to the English and Irish nobility of the day.
