Literature: For a comparable example see Fine Furniture & Works of Art, Lyon & Turnbull 2nd May 2018, lot 5.
Note: This rare 18th century Jacobite glass is a seldom encountered example of symbolism used in glassware of the period. In Seddon's seminal work 'The Jacobites and Their Drinking Glasses' no examples of the rose hidden in this form are recorded. The shape of glass is most commonly associated with English manufacture, and it may have been used by an English Jacobite supporter. Without doubt the English Jacobite supporters, post 1746, were closely watched by their Hanoverian neighbours and showing any overt support for the cause could result in lands being seized, status taken, and even death.
