Note:
Clarion is a diptych from Watt’s much admired series of works which depict sensuous folds of cloth and the play of light and shadow. These paintings were underpinned by close study of and admiration for the detail of Old Master paintings. Watt has titled this work ‘clarion’, a trumpet-like bugle from the Middle Ages renowned for its clear and shrill tone. The wording both alludes to the rounded funnel of material, reminiscent of the form of a musical instrument, as well as a sense of all that is pure and crisp.
