potted in generous proportions on a straight short foot, rising to a bulbous deep body to a flared rim, painted on the exterior with lotus flowers borne on slender tendrils above a band of ruyi-clouds near the foot, centre of the interior with a medallion of lotus sprays, the base with a six-character Jiajing mark in underglaze blue within a double-circle, with a wooden stand
Provenance: Private Scottish collection, Aberdeen; acquired from Roy M. Barling, the Director of Barling of Mount Street LTD (Grosvenor 2858; 112 Mount Street, London, W.I) in the late 1940s to early 1950s, thence by descent (by repute)
Note: a closely comparable large blue and white lotus bowl (31cm diameter) with Jiajing mark and of the period was in the Qing Court collection and now is in the collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei, museum no. Gu Ci 故瓷6104
