Note: Sir Frederick Hewitt MVO MD (1857-1916), was a pioneer in the early use of aenasthetics and a leading advocate for its application in all medical training schools. He also made significant contributions in the development of equipment and wrote the first aenasthetic textbook. In 1901 he was appointed Aenesthetist to King Edward VII and in 1902, two days before the King's coronation, administered aenesthetics during surgery for an appendix abscess. For this service he was awarded a Member of the Royal Victorian Order. In 1911 he was knighted for his contributions and service to the crown.
