Footnote
The original Tara brooch was discovered in 1850 by a child near Drogheda, north of Dublin. It was cast in silver and gilt, with intricate filigree decoration to the front and back and set with amber, enamel and glass; however the silver gilt copy here has no enamel or amber work. The original, dating from 650-750AD, is of remarkable quality for the period when made, and is now housed in The National Museum of Ireland.
