Zhang Daqian, born in Neijiang, Sichuan, went to Shanghai in 1919 to learn about painting and established his status in the art world during his time there.
His early style was deeply influenced by the Shanghai art market. Although he later developed a distinctive artistic style of his own, he is classified as a master of the Shanghai School in a broad sense due to his rise to fame and artistic activities in Shanghai.
