Dana Awartani is a Saudi Arabian multidisciplinary artist whose practice bridges traditional craftsmanship and contemporary conceptual art. Working across painting, installation, video, and performance, Awartani explores themes of cultural memory, geometry, and the transmission of knowledge through craft.
Educated at Central Saint Martins and the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts in London, she combines classical Islamic design principles with a modern aesthetic language. Her work often revives endangered artisanal techniques, such as geometric painting, illumination, and embroidery, reinterpreting them as living forms of cultural expression.
Through this synthesis, Awartani investigates identity, heritage, and the place of women’s labour within material history. Her works have been exhibited internationally, including at the Venice Biennale, the Smithsonian, and the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha.
