Important deposits are also found in Brazil, India, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa and Siberia.

The jardins within a stone can often provide clues to its origin. Colombian emeralds, for example, commonly contain three-phase inclusions made up of gas, liquid and minerals such as pyrite or mica, while Siberian emeralds may contain tourmaline needles.

Why are Emeralds Cut into Emerald Cuts?

Emeralds have a hexagonal crystal structure that contributes to their brittleness. Although they score 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale of hardness, they are not considered particularly tough gemstones and can chip relatively easily.

Lapidarists therefore avoid cuts that leave the stone vulnerable to damage. The eight-sided step cut offers greater protection to the corners and crystal structure of the stone.

This cut became so closely associated with emeralds that today it is universally known as the emerald cut.

Are Emeralds Treated?

History shows that gemstones have been treated to improve their appearance for centuries. Emeralds are commonly treated using oils, waxes and resins to enhance their clarity.

Unlike sapphires or rubies, emeralds are not heat treated, as the heat would damage the stone.

The Lechleitner method, achieved by hydrothermally coating the gem material is often easy to detect as the coating is likely to craze.

How do you know if an emerald has been treated?

Oil fillers can be visible with a jewellers’ loupe as the concentration of colour in the fissures stands out. Decomposed resins become visible to the unaided eye as they produce a white substance seen within the stone. Some treatments can be hard to see with the naked eye, but they can fluoresce white or yellow under UV light. Poorer quality or damaged emeralds can be filled with polymer as it also toughens the stone. Again, detection can be difficult, but when turned the stone will show colour flashes of yellow, orange or blue from the filler. These colours which are seen as light passes through the stone are not naturally occurring and so are a good indication the stone has been treated.

How Can You Tell if an Emerald Has Been Treated?

Oil fillers can often be seen using a jeweller's loupe, where concentrations of colour within fissures become visible. As resins decompose, they may produce a white substance that can be seen within the stone.

Some treatments are difficult to detect with the naked eye but fluoresce white or yellow under ultraviolet light. Poorer-quality or damaged emeralds may also be filled with polymer to improve durability. When viewed from different angles these fillers can produce unnatural flashes of yellow, orange or blue, indicating treatment.

Laboratory Testing Emeralds

State-of-the-art laboratories using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry (FTIR) or Raman Spectrometry can detect fillers with great accuracy.

The GIA and SSEF classify the extent of treatment as:

Nil – no surface-reaching fissures have been treated.
F1 (Minor) – slight enhancement to the stone's appearance.
F2 (Moderate) – moderate use of fillers such as oils or resins.
F3 (Significant) – substantial filling that noticeably affects appearance.

The amount of filler, together with the size, quantity and position of fractures, all contribute to the final assessment.

Taking Care of Your Emerald

Taking proper care of an emerald is essential. The emerald cut itself helps protect the stone, while robust settings such as bezel settings provide additional protection against knocks.

Heat can fracture the gemstone or evaporate fillers, while ultrasonic and steam cleaners may damage the stone or remove treatments. The safest way to clean emerald jewellery is with warm soapy water and a soft brush.
