He lent works to important exhibitions, including those at the gallery of his daughter Mary Stewart Lockhart (the celebrated designer Betty Joel) in 1927, 1936 and 1937.14 The collection grew as he befriended with contemporary artists, including Chiang Yee who gifted him Chinese Ink Painting of Crane with Pine Tree (lot 52) for his 70th birthday in 1928.
In 1966 Mary presented her father’s paintings to his former school, George Watson’s College in Edinburgh. For 20 years that institution has leant the collection to the National Museum of Scotland. Now, the curated group offered here allows scholars and those who love Chinese art, like Sir James, ‘pleasure from the poetry’. The money raised from this auction will provide bursary places for others to learn at George Watson’s College.
Lyon & Turnbull kindly thank David Macdonald for his research and knowledge with regards this collection.
