Begin with the Maker
Behind every great silver object is a maker with skill, vision and a story to tell. Look out for silversmiths who’ve trained at leading institutions like the Glasgow School of Art or the London Metropolitan University, or whose work has featured in key exhibitions and design showcases. Makers like Malcolm Appleby, Jane Short and Ndidi Ekubia are good names to start with but so too are the next generation.
Understand the Hallmark
Most contemporary silver made in the UK is hallmarked, a series of tiny symbols stamped into the metal, indicating its purity, maker, and where and when it was assayed. By law, sterling silver must be 92.5% pure. A hallmark isn’t just a legal formality - it’s a key part of a piece’s identity, and often adds to its appeal and value.
Follow Your Instinct
Some collectors lean towards functionality: candlesticks, bowls, vases. Others are drawn to sculptural or conceptual works. What matters most is what speaks to you. Is it the finish? The shape? The craftsmanship? Or the story behind it?
