Among the many designs created by C.F.A. Voysey, The River Rug is one of the most remarkable and unusual. A highlights of the October 2026 edition of Design Since 1860, the design departs from the stylised repeating patterns of birds, animals and foliage for which Voysey became renowned, presenting an intricate bird’s-eye view of a meandering rural landscape, transforming the carpet into a richly detailed pictorial map.
Probably conceived as a hearth rug, its composition rewards close inspection. Villages, cottages and farmhouses are scattered across the landscape among cultivated fields, winding roads and bridges, while boats make their way along the river. The numerous small details give the design an appealing narrative quality, suggesting the rhythms of everyday life unfolding within an imagined English countryside.
Hidden among these scenes also appears to be a miniature representation of Voysey’s own house, The Orchard. Whether intended as a personal signature or simply as a playful detail, its inclusion adds to the intimate, almost storybook character of the design.
