As part of Lyon & Turnbull’s 200th anniversary, Romey Clark, our Associate Fine Art Specialist, reflects on what draws her to art and why discovering and collecting art remains as relevant now as it has been for centuries.
One of the things I love most about art is its sheer variety. With so many artists, periods, and styles to choose from, it can feel almost impossible to single out just one favourite. That diversity is what makes engaging with art so endlessly rewarding: there is always something new to discover, and something different to fall in love with.
That said, there are artists I return to time and again. Dame Laura Knight is one of them. Her intricate drawings from the circus and ballet are particularly captivating. Rather than presenting the performance itself, Knight often places us just behind the curtain, looking out onto the stage. These works feel wonderfully intimate, revealing moments that audiences rarely see. They capture the quiet anticipation, concentration, and humanity that exist beyond the spotlight.
