Description
Rome, 29 December 1742. In French, single bifolium, written on one side only, with address panel on verso of conjugate leaf, 27.6 x 20cm, the body of the letter in a clerk's hand, with James' autograph signature ‘Votre bon amy Jacques R’ at foot, and an autograph postscript by James in Italian, initialled ‘GR’ (i.e. Giacomo Re'), the letter addressed to the Archbishop of Iconium and Apostolic Nuncio to Vienna ('Iconie' misspelt ‘Ionie’ in letter but correctly on address leaf), thanking him for his Christmas wishes, retaining red wax seal (with concomitant seal tear) to address leaf
