Whitehall. 27 January 1708. Single bifolium (22.4 x 18cm), written on 2 sides, conjugate leaf blank, tipped to album leaf, the letter addressed to ‘My Dear Harie' (possibly Harry Maule, 1659-1734, titular 5th Earl of Panmure, maternal uncle of Mar, and fellow participant in the Jacobite Rebellion of 1715 and the Battle of Sheriffmuir)

A detailed and important letter in which Mar discusses the first parliament of Great Britain, that is, the first session of parliament since the 1707 Act of Union, with special regard to the activities of the pro-Union faction led by Lord Tweeddale (the ‘squadronie’): ‘I fancie you are prittie indifferent how to Parl[iament] of Britain orders matters. I cannot imagin that the people of Scotland who wish for no thorow revolution are much pleased wth [what] the Squadronie does […] I hope the squadronie shall not succeed farr that way, but you’ll say I'm too long a thinking so […]'.
