Jean-Étienne Liotard (1702 –1789) was born in Geneva. He belonged to a distinguished French Huguenot family of painters, miniaturists and art dealers. Active in many of the principal capitals of Europe, the family enjoyed the patronage of both aristocratic and royal courts. In 1723, working in Paris, he received a commission in 1735 for a portrait of Pope Clement XII. His artistic style was shaped by extensive travel, particularly time spent in Turkey, where exposure to Ottoman art and culture introduced an exotic influence that distinguished their work from that of many of their European contemporaries. After four years in the Middle East he returned to Paris.
His work forms part of notable collections including The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection now on loan to the V&A museum, which showcases a box by Liotard, depicting John, 1st Earl of Spencer - Loan:Gilbert.408-2008.
