Description
hand-coloured, heightened in gum arabic, approx. dimensions 55 x 37cm, light toning, several with sewing-holes along one edge, occasional ink-stamps of Newcastle-upon-Tyne public library to versos, a few spots and finger-marks. Comprising:
1) Machetes pugnax (ruff), breeding plumage; 2) Machetes pugnax (ibid.), 'in the plumage of the first autumn'; 3) Limicola pygmaea (broad-billed sandpiper), short closed tear to foot; 4) Actitis hypoleucos (common sandpiper); 5) Arquatella maritima (purple sandpiper); 6) Totanus glareola (wood sandpiper); 7) Totanus ochropus (green sandpiper); 8) Himantopus candidus (black-winged stilt), 9) Oedicnemus creptians (stone-curlew); 10) Strepsilas interpres (ruddy turnstone); 11) Glottis cancescens (greenshank); 12) Pelidna cinclus (dunlin), summer plumage, 13) Numenius phaeopus (whimbrel); 14) Tringa canutus (red knot); 15) Cursorius gallicus (cream-coloured courser)
