Footnote
The execution of King Charles I in 1649 marked a defining moment in British history. Whilst some hailed the death of king, those in favour of the Stuart monarchy remained. In the aftermath of the dramatic execution of the ruling monarch, supporters of King Charles I sought to subtly signal their ongoing support for the Stuarts.
The late 17th century thus benefitted from the fashioning of pieces which would later become known as ‘Stuart crystal’ jewellery, crafted for wear by loyal supporters of the late king. These items typically featured fashioned rock crystal stones encasing finely woven hairwork design delicately overlaid with intricate wire ciphers, to create discreet yet deeply symbolic memorial jewels.
The intricate design of these rare pieces would influence mourning jewellery in the century that followed, where hairwork beneath crystal became a cherished expression of remembrance.
