Description
According as they are Sung in the Kirk of Scotland. Edinburgh: prented at Edinburgh be [sic] Henry Charteris, 1596. 8vo (14.9 x 8.7cm), early 19th-century(?) embossed calf with a Gothic architectural design reminiscent of George Mullen of Dublin with gilt tooling on borders and spine and marbled pastedowns and endpapers, several leaves lacking: 3 leaves of the ‘Almanac,’ pages 113-128 of the section ‘Prayers Used Commonlie in the Kirk of Scotland’; from the main part of the work, ‘The Psalmes of David in Metre,’ the following pages are missing: 27-30, 129-144, 215-218, 225-270, 287-302, 553-545, [5] pages of the Table of Psalmes; from the ‘Catechisme ’section, the following pages are missing: [1]-[4] including the individual title page, 13-16; from the "Ordour of Excommunicatioun" section, which has been bound near the start of the volume, the following pages are lacking: individual title page, 17 leaves at the end; ‘The Ordour and Doctrine of the Generall Fasting’ has been bound at the start, no general title page as recorded in extant copies, in this copy the title page of the ‘Psalmes’ is dated 1596, some dampstaining and dust-soiling throughout, some minor loss of text to 8 leaves in the ‘Psalmes’ section, binding worn in places with joints cracking, with various contemporary and near contemporary ownership inscriptions in text [STC (2nd ed.), 16585; ESTC S125811]
