Avant Garde: Art From 1900 to Now is an exciting new addition to our London sale calendar. It will take place live in London and online the evening before our already highly successful MODERN MADE – Art, Design & Studio Ceramics auction, the two sales combining to offer collectors the best of creativity, in all media, from the last 120 years.
The forthcoming sale will focus on painting, drawing and sculpture, from the beginning of the ‘Modern’ at the turn of the 20th Century, through the following decades of artistic revolution either side of the world wars that changed so much, and on to Post-Modernism in the present day.
The curated offering will look to touch upon all the significant movements in art in this most radical of long centuries, whilst drawing connections between what was happening here in Britain with developments across Europe, America, the Far East and beyond.
The pre-sale exhibition will be held at the prestigious Mall Galleries in central London – next door to the Institute of Contemporary Arts, which itself was such a prominent place of international artistic exchange in the post-war period and which continues to be one of London’s most important cultural centres. The Mall Galleries are an artist-led focal point for contemporary art, located in the heart of London in the John Nash-designed Carlton House Terrace, which looks out onto The Mall itself. Sharing the same building as the world-renowned Institute of Contemporary Arts, the Galleries are close both to major museums such as The National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery and Mayfair, the centre of London’s commercial art world. As well as hosting exhibitions and national art prizes, the Galleries are also home to Lyon & Turnbull’s spring and autumn Art & Design Seasons, designed to showcase the finest of modern and contemporary art, craft and design.
Ahead of the auction, we will be providing a virtual tour of the pre-sale exhibition, allowing you to browse your favourite lots from anywhere in the world.
