Born in Mei County, Guangdong, Lin Fengmian is often regarded as a "Shanghai School" painter in a broad sense, especially during his later years when he settled in Shanghai.
Renowned for his fusion of Chinese and Western artistic styles, he is frequently considered, along with the similarly innovative Liu Haisu, a representative of the "Sino-Western fusion" in the Shanghai art scene. Although he was not among the traditional Shanghai School painters, as a pioneer of modern painting, he established a unique position as part of the "Modern Shanghai School" in Shanghai.
