Sir Hubert von Herkomer was a German-born British painter, printmaker, enamellist and influential teacher. In 1883, he founded the Herkomer Art School at Bushey, Hertfordshire, where he taught composition, landscape and portraiture until the school closed in 1904.
More than 500 students studied at Bushey, including Lucy Kemp-Welch, Algernon Talmage and William Nicholson. Herkomer rejected rigid teaching methods in favour of developing each student’s individual abilities. Following his retirement, Kemp-Welch continued the school’s work and established Bushey as an important centre for animal painting.
