Born in Syracuse, Giuseppe Campanelli spent his childhood in Tripoli, Libya, before returning to Italy and settling in Lucca during the war years.
The son of an artist, he learned the fundamentals of drawing, modelling and metalwork in his father’s blacksmith workshop. He later studied at the Art School in Florence and the Marble School in Carrara, graduating in 1947. The following year he began teaching drawing in state schools while continuing his practice as a sculptor.
His work was exhibited widely in Italy, including at the Exhibition of the Two Seas, Palermo (1966); the 2nd Biennial of Painting and Sculpture (1976); Gruppo 6 Art Club, Pachino (1978); and later exhibitions in Avola, Syracuse and Marzamemi. A posthumous retrospective, The Nudes, was held at Galleria Roma, Syracuse (1998).
A close friend of Corrado Brancato and Vittorio Giaracca, he shared a studio with the latter for a time.
