George Faulkner Armitage started his career as a woodcarver and his workshop and design studio were in his home, Stamford House.
Carvers in his studio in the 1880s included Arthur Simpson (British 1857‑1922) who later set up his own studio in Kendal. In 1888, Armitage was commissioned to remodel the front section of the interior of The Fine Art Society, the front of its New Bond Street building having been remodelled in 1881 by E. W. Godwin. The walls were panelled in exceptional mahogany.
