David Lightly is a Scottish Borders-based furniture maker specialising in sculptural, handcrafted furniture made from native hardwoods. He trained under the late sculptor and furniture maker Tim Stead, working with him for 12 years at Tim Stead Furniture.
Following Stead’s death in 2000, Lightly continued working with Maggy Stead at The Workshop of Tim Stead for a further 12 years. When she retired in 2012, he acquired the business and established The Wood Neuk at Stead’s former workshop in Blainslie.
The Wood Neuk is licensed to produce Tim Stead’s established furniture designs while also developing original work. Lightly’s furniture retains Stead’s sensitivity to the character of wood, combining functional forms with an expressive, sculptural approach. Pieces are principally handmade from native hardwoods, including elm and oak, selected and sourced by the workshop.
