Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel earned the nickname “Coco” in the clubs that she sang in during the early 1900’s. From the stage to the sewing machine in these early years Coco Chanel became a name synonymous with fine French couture fashion.
In February 1955 the timeless classic flap bag or “2.55” was designed by Coco Chanel to support the fashion house’s sales alongside collections of costume jewellery. Coco was a pioneer in costume jewellery being one of the first to mix fine and fashion jewels in one look, meaning that clients were able to buy into the Chanel look in its entirety. In the 1980’s the retail genius Karl Lagerfeld entered the house and took the brand to new heights. Handbags, ready to wear fashion and jewellery began to bear the now famous interlocking CC logo, now one of the most sought-after motifs in luxury fashion.
