And That Was The Beginning Of The End Of That | Cuba | Photographs by Iain Clark
Lyon & Turnbull are delighted to present a photographic exhibition by the artist Iain Clark, Cuba: And that was the beginning of the end of that. The exhibiton will run from Friday, 31 July to Sunday, 02 August 2015.
Iain Clark is a Glasgow-based photographic artist, whose work is held in the permanent collection of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery, London as well as private collections across the world.
Iain has attracted positive recognition for his portrait work, which is driven by his passionate interest in the people around him. He says
“I am fascinated by the human condition and the huge variety of faces that I see every day. I believe that each and every one of us is unique and special. When I work on a portrait I strive to bring out something of the sitter’s soul.”
Clark approaches his work as a twenty-first century response to the eighteenth century art of portraiture, and he often digitally fuses image, colour and identity to create a ‘new way of seeing.’
Recent projects include ‘Intimate Portraits of Scottish Writers at Aye Write Glasgow’s Book Festival,’ where Clark captured the likeness of prominent Scottish writers speaking at the festival. In recognition of his talent for capturing personalities, the Mitchell Library purchased the entire collection of 44 portraits for their permanent collection.
In this new body of work, he offers a glimpse of Cuba, “the mythical island, a Shangri-La in a troubled world, caught in a time warp for the last fifty years.” His photographs present colourful memories of this striking place with its instantly recognsiable visual identity; the crumbling buildings, lack of shops, proliferation of classic American cars running on 'make do and mend' mechanics and images of Che Guevara. A country on the brink of transformation, these photographs capture this famous iconography, just as it is set to undergo a wave of change.
