We are delighted to present The Peasant and his Wife of c.1941 by the Polish-Jewish avant-garde artist Jankel Adler (1895-1949) to the market this Spring.
It is a rare and major example of European Modernism painted in Britain, as well as a testament to the importance of the time Adler spent in Glasgow between 1941 and 1943. The painting was acquired from the artist shortly after it was created and has remained in a private collection in the city ever since. Having been lent to several major exhibitions, the work will be displayed publicly for the first time in over forty years in our Glasgow location before being shown in our Edinburgh saleroom.
The painting can be viewed by appointment in the Boardroom at 33 Broughton Place, while our Contemporary Art auction will be on view in the main saleroom. Appointments can be booked by email.
