We are delighted to present The Peasant and his Wife of c.1941 by the Polish-Jewish avant-garde artist Jankel Adler (1895-1949) to the market this Spring.
It is a rare and major example of European Modernism painted in Britain, as well as a testament to the importance of the time Adler spent in Glasgow between 1941 and 1943. The painting was acquired from the artist shortly after it was created and has remained in a private collection in the city ever since. Having been lent to various major exhibitions, it will be displayed in public for the first time in over forty years, in our gallery in Glasgow this month.
Works by leading Modern European and Modern British artists will hang beside The Peasant and his Wife, including by Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, Duncan Grant, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Gustav Klimt, Robert MacBryde, Winifred Nicholson, Victor Pasmore, Mary Potter and Walter Sickert. All the works are to be offered in our MODERN MADE sale on 01 May 2026, except for Sea Front by Victor Pasmore which is to be sold by Private Treaty Sale.
The works can be viewed by appointment made via email.
The Peasant and his Wife will also be on view by appointment in our Edinburgh saleroom from 29 & 30 March 2026.
