Description
The Noble Admiral Lord Nelson falling in the arms of Victory, by a mortal wound recd. from a musket ball in the left breast … London: P. Patriarcha, March 11, 1806. Framed, large size.
Note: Le Quesne 54. Across the stern of the sinking vessel is the name S. Trinidada. (See note to the previous lot). The inscription describes Hardy as telling Nelson about the number of enemy ships striking “to our brave tars”, but this took place not on the quarter deck as depicted here, but shortly before Nelson’s death in the cockpit.
