Auction: Day One: 09 July 2008 | From 12:00
Description
The Noble Admiral Lord Nelson fell in the arms of Victory by the wound in his left breast…. London: P. Gally, March 14, 1806. Framed, large size.
Note: Le Quesne 53. On the stern of the sinking ship is its name, S. Trindada, clearly representing the Spanish ship (140 guns), then one of the largest vessels afloat. In fact she sank during the gale following the battle, and not as during the battle as depicted here. Across the back of the second ship, flying the Red Ensign, is the name Royal Sovereign but in reverse suggesting that the name was a later addition added by someone not realising that the addition would be read from back to front when viewed from the front. As often, the White Ensign is incorrectly depicted.
