The subject of this work derives from the 1772 Scots ballad Auld Robin Gray written by the Scottish poet Lady Anne Lindsay. A label verso is inscribed with the following lines:
'- my Father brak' his arm
and the cow was stown away;
My Mother she fell sick-
my Jamie at the sea;
And Auld Robin Gray cam
a courting me…
…an' with tears in his ee
said "Jeanie, for their sakes
will ye no marry me?"'
