Footnote
This portrait is a Victorian copy of a mid 16th century portrait that was previously acknowledged to be Mary Queen of Scots in the late 19th and early 20th century. Thought to be an image of Mary during her time at the French court, the attribution was later disproved. Another contemporary copy of this painting, ‘Portrait of an Unknown Lady’ resides in the collection of The Holburne Museum, Bath, bequeathed by Miss Mary Anne Barbara Holburne in 1882.
