Footnote
Maclauchlan Milne mounted an exhibition of his work in his Dundee studio in March 1927, the year in which he painted the present work and a press report discussed his depictions of Cannes, St Raphael and St Tropez (and others of Largo and the Cairngorms).
An exhibition with art dealers Alex. Reid & Lefèvre Ltd in Glasgow in September to October of that year was reviewed by The Glasgow Herald on 28 September 1927, which explained: ‘Mr Milne recently spent a considerable period in the south of France, and the majority of the works he has on view are the fruits of his visit to the environs of St Tropez..’
The press report names nine of the 39 paintings, comprising 24 oils and 15 watercolour sketches. Although A Quiet Street in the South of France is not one of those mentioned, these other nine named paintings were all from that region.
