Footnote
This is one of a number of pictures by Maclauchlan Milne which capture street scenes of figures, shopfronts and commercial activity. This painting presents a busy market scene, mixing sunshine and shadow. Other related paintings include L’Epicerie, 1929 and A French Market, whilst others have titles including St Tropez in 1926 and Cassis from 1924. The artist first travelled to the south of France in 1924, returning several times in the 1920s. 1931 was probably the year of his his last continental trip.
