Born in London in 1908, Norman Hepple was the son of portrait painter Robert Hepple, and nephew to Wilson Hepple, and would follow family tradition by studying at Goldsmith's College of Art and the Royal Academy schools. During World War II he was appointed official artist to the National Fire Brigade, and several works from that period are now held in the Imperial War Museum. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1961,
and would become President of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. Like his father, he would become famed for his portraits, painting Queen Elizabeth II and other members of the Royal family, yet taking perhaps more delight in capturing the likeness of his grandchildren in freer and less formal compositions.
