oval, likely watercolour on ivory, set inside a glazed gilt metal locket, the reverse also glazed, framing ink inscription FROM THE TOP OF A DIAMOND SNUFF BOX GIVEN TO XIII LORD ELPHINSTONE IN 1853 BY THE KING OF HANOVER, THE DIAMONDS WERE SET IN A BRACELET IN 1865

Formed the lid of a snuff box gifted to John Elphinstone, 13th Lord Elphinstone, 1st Baron Elphinstone (Scottish 1807-1860) by King George V of Hanover (1819-1878) in 1853.
