Note: Born in Newcastle in 1715, William Hutchinson went from East India trader to the Royal Navy to privateer to dockmaster of Liverpool harbour within his lifetime. As an addition to his professional roles, Hutchinson also helped to establish the world's first lifeboat station, at Formby and worked with doctors on improving methods of artificial respiration for drowning victims. Yet another claim to fame for Hutchinson is that in 1763 he installed a parabolic reflector in Leasow Lighthouse, possibly the first time this had ever been done.
