Description
Photograph album, comprising 136 photographs, early 20th century, primarily on board the SMS Prinz Heinrich, following Schröder and his wife's journey: leaving Bavaria to board the ship in Napoli, which sets sail for Shanghai stopping off in Malaysia and eventually arriving in Kyoto, many photographs from the ship depict the liner's impressive architecture, and there are also numerous portraits of passengers in which Schröder himself appears (No. 109); including 14 chrome photographs from their time in Japan which are numbered and titled- these were popular photographs for Western tourists of traditional scenes in Kyoto such as image 37 of the Gate of the Chionin Buddhist Temple, and image 10 of the 16th century Buddhist temple of East-Honganji, the largest photograph 25.8cm x 19.9cm
