Note: Edinburgh-born Alan Ian Ronald studied at Edinburgh College of Art under Henry Lintott, David Alison and D. M. Sutherland before serving in France in the First World War with the Royal Scottish Fusiliers, where he produced sketches of the conflict. He was became a member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1935 and he travelled throughout the UK, producing many watercolours of the local countryside. He had a great interest in architecture and painted cathedrals and churches in particular. He depicted the construction of both the Kincardine and Forth Road Bridges with a series of watercolours, the present group of watercolours is a great example of this aspect of his career. He has exhibited throughout Britain, the British Commonwealth, Europe and the USA and his work is in the War Artists Permanent Collection, Recording Britain Collection and in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum.
