Qaboos bin Said Al Said (1940-2020) was Sultan of Oman from 1970 until his death in January 2020. He was a fifteenth-generation descendant of the founder of the Al Bu Said dynasty. Educated in England, Sultan Qaboos became a passionate watch collector, photographs show him wearing an IWC Compass amongst other watches. Not long after taking power, he collaborated with many watch companies commissioning special dials adorned with the Omani Khanjar royal crest, including Rolex, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet. The examples made for IWC include the Yacht Club, IWC Porsche and most notably the Ingenieur.
These special commissions feature the Omani Khanjar, a traditional dagger which originated in Oman, and forms part of the Omani royal crest and the county's flag. These rare watches were never for retail. Instead they were only gifted to visiting dignitaries or an individual who distinguished themselves in the service of the Sultanate, including SAS troops.
This particular model, the Ingenieur SL Quartz Reference 9701 in gold, is understood to have been produced in just a few dozen units in the early 1980s and is considered extremely rare and highly sought after.
