Footnote
Gérald Charles Genta (1931-2011) is regarded as one of the most influential figures in 20th century horology. Born in Geneva, Switzerland he initially trained as a goldsmith before beginning work with Universal Genève.
Genta is responsible for designing amongst the most recognisable and famed watches of the second half of the 20th century. In 1972 he worked with Audemars Piguet to design the Royal Oak, which is generally considered the world's first luxury sport's watch. Genta's inspiration came from traditional diving helmets and featured industrial elements such as exposed screwheads.
His collaborations continued in 1974 with his design for IWC of Ingenieur SL Jumbo Ref. 1832 which began manufacturing in 1976 and was soon after known as the “Jumbo”. Then in 1976 Patek Philippe introduced the Nautilus collection the company's first sport watch, which was also designed by Genta.
Genta ultimately setting up his own eponymous line of timepieces ‘Gerald Genta’.
