A PAIR OF SAFAVID CUERDA SECA POTTERY TILES WITH A FOX OR WILD DOG
PERSIA, 17TH CENTURY

Auction: 10 June 2026 from 14:00 BST
Description
each tile is of square form, decorated in brown, yellow and manganese on a yellow ground with black outline, depicting a fox in the wild surrounded by floral designs, mounted on a stand
Dimensions
45.2cm x 22.4cm
Footnote
The fox is beautifully depicted in an earthly tone with a white stomach. The head is turned in the opposite direction to the body as if disturbed by a noise or movement, the front legs are stretched out as if resisting forward motion with ears pricked up and alert. The fox is surrounded by floral decoration of similar colour tones from all sides enabling fox to blend into its natural habitat. This tile would have formed part of a much larger ceramic scene and is likely to have been placed on the walls of an important house or palace.
