Footnote
Note: Lion Gardiner (1599-1663), an antecedent of Lord Robert Gardiner, was an English engineer and colonist who founded the first English settlement in New York acquiring land on eastern Long Island courtesy of King Charles I. As a loyal supporter of the King it is possible the portrait was acquired at this time and passed down through the family. King Charles I was a visitor to Wilton House, the home of Philip Herbert and Lady Clifford.
