Note: Portsoy, on the northeast Banffshire coast, was famed for its polished green and reddish veined stone taken from a nearby quarry. Known as Portsoy marble, it is in fact a type of serpentine, and was popular in the 18th century for chimneypieces and reputedly exported to France for use in the Palace of Versailles.
